Smoke Alarm Installation
It is required in the state of Victoria that all homes, units, townhouses and flats built after 1997 must have 240-volt mains-powered smoke alarm systems with a battery backup. Homes built prior to 1997 are required to have a 9-volt battery powered smoke alarm as a minimum requirement.
240V smoke alarms are sometimes known as hardwired or mains powered smoke alarms. These smoke alarms are powered by the home’s main power supply and have a battery for backup when this power is limited or unavailable due to a power outage.
It’s important to note that a power outage is very commonly found with house fires, therefore making the battery backup critically important.
A preferred style of smoke alarm and one that is recommended by the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade is the Photoelectric smoke alarm. This type of smoke alarm is much faster to respond than traditional styles and is less prone to causing false alarms and is very effective at alarming to smouldering fires giving you and your family the earliest possible warning system.
Millerwatts recommend the use of either 240V smoke alarms or Photoelectric smoke alarms depending on your home and layout. Our team can help you select a smoke alarm that meets the needs of your home and family.
